We have a number of break time clubs run by ‘Off The Fence’ which offer students the opportunity to participate in games and quizzes and have fun. There are different clubs for Year 7 and Year 8 all of which are called “The Hub”
The Drama department runs a popular after school club for Year 7 and 8 students. We have offered master classes with professionals from the industry for Year 9s. All students have the opportunity to audition for the annual production, which has been performed at outside theatres, such as the Sallis Benney and The Old Market. Students of all ages have enjoyed seeing productions of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, ‘Earthquakes in London’, ‘Stomp’ and ‘War Horse’ at local and London theatres. A fantastic theatre company called Theatre Centre bring their exciting productions into Cardinal Newman annually for the Year 11 GCSE drama groups to experience.
In 2015 Year 7 students were directed by Year 12 students in a production of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and there was a whole school production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ performed in the Newman College Lecture Theatre. The forthcoming production in 2016 is ‘Grease’.
There is a French club for students in Years 7 and 8 after school every Wednesday Week B from 3.00 to 4.00 in room CS15. This club is designed to help students develop their knowledge of the French language, culture, food and traditions. Activities will include games, quizzes, videos, songs, discussions and food tasting.
The Music Department offers a rich and varied extra curricular programme. Students have the opportunity to develop their instrumental and vocal skills by joining our music groups. All students are encouraged to join our main choir, Newman Voices which performs at all of our school events. All instrumentalists who play a string, wind or brass instrument are invited to join our Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra or Brass Ensemble. Other popular clubs include Drive Up Jazz, Funk Band, Ukulele and Guitar Club, Keyboard Club, World Percussion and Music Technology clubs. We also join with the Drama Department to stage annual Musical Productions, most recently Grease and this year we are presenting Billy Elliot.
Highlights of the school year include an annual performance at an external venue, Jazz & Pop concerts in the Octagon and Classical recital in the Chapel. We also have an annual music tour and recent destinations have included Belgium, London, Paris and Disneyland. Small group and individual instrumental lessons are provided by Brighton & Hove Music & Arts for those students who wish to learn. We would strongly encourage anyone who is keen on music to take up instrumental or vocal tuition. Lessons are reasonably priced and in some cases are available free of charge.
Sports clubs take place after school every day from 3.00 – 5.00p.m. and are open to all students. This year they include gymnastics, netball, boys’ and girls’ football, basketball, badminton, athletics and cricket. We also have a well established dance performance group which performs at the dome every year.
Homework club is for all years and runs in MG5 from 3pm – 4pm on Mondays and Wednesdays.
It is for anyone needing help with any homework and is run by Mr Bates.
