Tom Cannell has joined the school this week as Anti-Bullying Coordinator. He will work with Years 7-11 and is based in the Anti-Bullying Office which has a drop-in clinic for any students who want to go to a trusted third party to talk in a safe non-judgmental environment.
Tom joins the school after spending seven years at Longhill School where he has worked as an Inclusion Learning Mentor. He will be introduced to all Year Groups during assemblies next week which is also Anti-Bullying Week. Tom will be available to students every break time throughout the week and will also work with parents if they have any concerns. His role will involve taking part in weekly check-ins, class observations and he will be a key liaison with staff. Tom also hopes to introduce a Restorative Justice Programme at the school which brings those harmed by conflict and those responsible for the harm into communication; enabling everyone affected by a particular incident to play a part in repairing the harm and finding a positive way forward.
He will also work closely with the school’s Year 10 Student Anti-Bullying Ambassadors who are trained by Kidscape and give support to students in each year group. The initiative has been running for the past year and has had a very positive response from both students and parents.
Anti-bullying Week 2017 is being held between the 13th and 17th November. The theme will promote difference and equality in schools with the tag-line ‘All Different, All Equal’. The effects of bullying can have a massive impact on all individuals. Anti-bullying week is a great way to get involved, take a stand against bullying and raise awareness in school. Cardinal Newman students will be celebrating what makes every student unique. In true ‘caritas’ spirit, they will be talking about our caring community and how we should all look out for one another.
Tom Cannell, Anti-Bullying Coordinator, said “I feel very proud to be at Cardinal Newman Catholic School. I have been amazed by how welcoming everyone has been over these past few days of my first week. I am looking forward to meeting everyone and getting to work with students, staff and parents.”
Dr James Kilmartin, Headteacher, said: This is a vital role which enables everyone in our school community to feel safe and supported.”
