On Wednesday 18th January fifteen of our Year 11 students travelled to Oxford accompanied by Mr Shears and Mr Stone. They spent the morning at St John’s College, finding out about Oxford and discovering how to maximise their chances of being successful applicants to what we were told is ‘the world’s finest University’. They discovered that excellent GCSEs, high expectations and lots of wider reading would be the key to their success.
In the afternoon they were shown around Oxford by Sam Reeves, Charlie Gould, Iggy Wood and Matthew Karadzas, all Newman alumni currently in their first year as Oxford undergraduates. Matthew and Sam are students of Worcester College, and we finished the day there with a question and answer session in which our Year 11s discovered all they needed to know about the challenges and rewards of student life at Oxford.
Iggy, Sam, Matthew and Charlie are great role models – we look forward to seeing the impact their advice has on our current students in the coming months and years!
